Remotes learn to ring, and to hush

New messages in Remotes can now pop a browser banner and play a chime, each with its own switch. A quick mute quiets any remote for an hour, a week, or good.

Top storyTook the lead from Your quote lands without a reload #1017. Remotes now can show a browser banner and play a chime for new messages, and each remote can be muted for an hour, a week, or forever. Held off 17 challengers since.

You are deep in another tab when a small banner slides in from the corner, headed /dev/null · Remotes, and a soft chime plays. Click the banner and you are in the conversation, cursor ready. Nothing about the message itself escapes to the operating system.

Credit goes to paulinevos, who gave Remotes a voice and a volume knob. Banners and sound are separate switches under Remotes in Settings → Profile, both on by default, and the site asks for notification permission only when you press Allow notifications. Your inbox is checked every 15 seconds, or every 6 while a conversation is open, and the first check only records where you are, so opening the site never replays the backlog. A 10-second cooldown shared across remotes and tabs keeps a burst to one alert, and banners carry no message text.

Open a remote's … menu, choose Mute, then For one hour, Until tomorrow, For one week, or Forever. Until tomorrow ends at midnight in your account's timezone, or UTC if you have not set one. The mute follows your account onto other devices and appears in your data export, but it never hides messages or touches unread counts. Unmute sits in the same menu.

One catch. None of this is push. Close the site and the checking stops, so there is no banner and no chime until you come back. Browsers can also freeze a background tab and leave you in silence.

Moderation opens a Bulk tab for the busiest accounts

Your moderation page now lists the accounts following, starring, replying and posting faster than anyone should. Pick 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, and put the worst ones in timeout without leaving the list.

Also leadingTook the lead from Your quote lands without a reload #1017. Moderators get a bulk view ranking accounts by follows, stars, replies, posts over 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days, with timeout and ban controls on each row. Held off 15 challengers since.

Open Moderation and there is a fourth tab. It is called Bulk. Click it and four lists stack up the page. They are Follows, Stars, Replies, Posts, busiest account first. Each header tells you the rate it takes to appear. These are the accounts working through every newcomer.

Credit goes to mnapoli, who built it. To make a list you need 50 follows a day, or 30 different people starred, 20 people replied to, or 15 top-level posts, all multiplied by the days in the window, so a week asks 350 follows. Each list stops at ten names. Every row tells you how many of those people signed up inside the window too, which is how you spot a signup crawler. GitHub imports and bots are filtered out, and the timeout and ban menu sits right on the row.

One catch is that the threshold grows with the window. An account that follows 200 people today is gone from the 7-day list, since a week asks 350, and the 30-day list wants 1,500. Catch fresh bursts on 24 hours. The longer views only show sustained grinds.

Click the quoted strip above a reply and the chat now pages back through history until it reaches the original, spotlights it, then offers a button back to the newest messages. Before, a refreshed tab just sat there.

In Brief

Fixes 9

  • Remote alerts now keep blinking the tab title until you open the sending remote in a visible, focused tab. #1056
  • Retrying a poll vote from a restored page now returns the latest results with the original choice intact, instead of an 'already voted' error. #1031
  • Browser tab titles now show (99+) instead of the full unread count once it passes 99, keep exact numbers up to 99, and drop the prefix at zero. #1072
  • Sending a chat message while you're at the bottom now leaves the new bubble in place instead of nudging it upward. #1090
  • Reaction chips and the voice-note mic now use the site's shared tooltips instead of the browser's native title bubbles. #1082
4 more fixes
  • In Remotes, the member count label now fades and collapses on hover, keyboard focus, or active selection so longer org names get the space. #1083
  • The expanded sidebar's account menu now matches the width of the profile row that opens it, ending a 12px overhang. #1068
  • Chat bubbles no longer gain 8px when the sidebar collapses or expands, so messages ending in a code block stop jumping during the animation. #1085
  • Tooltip arrows now stay anchored while the bubble animates in, instead of sliding sideways and snapping into place when the motion ends. #1089

Features 4

  • Operations → Metrics now stacks each daily active-user bar into returning people, new signups who activated, new signups who did not, and signups under 12 hours old. #1018
  • Hovering any of the eight compromised certificate fingerprints swaps the hash for "4", including inside inline code and code blocks. #1084
  • Selecting a name in the desktop chat dock or above a group message now opens that person's profile instead of minimizing the chat. #1058
  • The Daily active users chart now casts a curved shadow from each day's total down to the next day's returning users, and paints new users amber against returning users in blue. #1025

Internals 1

  • Activation now counts starring posts by 2 people or following 10 within 12 hours, down from 3 starred authors, with GitHub-imported follows excluded. #1032

Docs 1

  • Encryption guidance now covers only sensitive content like message bodies and personal details, so timestamps, booleans, counters, and status fields can use plain columns. #1076

Chores 1

  • Dialogs, the signed-out sidebar, achievement tooltips, chat previews, and legal pages now draw /dev/null in the same outlined-slash wordmark used in commit text. #1074
