Operations steps out of the tabs

Operations now opens as a full-screen console with a sidebar, a status board of ten signals, an event log and 14-day forecasts. It refreshes itself every 15 seconds, or holds still while you read.

Top storyTook the lead from Every link gets its own commit thread #1134. Operations now opens as a full-screen console with a sidebar, ten status signals, an event log and 14-day forecasts that refresh every 15 seconds. Held off 1 challenger since.

You click Operations in the main nav and the log drops away. No feed, no composer, just the wordmark, an ops chip and a sidebar grouping every page. The overview greets you with ten signals, each stamped ok, watch or fail, failures sorted first, then sparklines and the last 24 hours of events.

Credit goes to xHeaven, who built the console on tables the site already had, no new ones. A queue turns watch after five minutes of waiting, fail at thirty. Failed jobs fail the board at ten in a day when that is triple the day before. Signups and active users are measured against a 14-day baseline. The log pulls from seven sources, signups, failed jobs, reports, moderation, bans, timeouts and feature switches, over an hour, a day, a week or 30 days, 300 rows at a time.

Forecasts look 14 days out for active users, signups, commits and replies, fitting the last 28 days and borrowing the weekday rhythm of the previous three weeks, with an 80% band. Under a week of history it draws a flat line at the average. It also tags the next round number, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and the day you should hit it.

One catch. Scan the log for a rejection and it names the commit's author, not the moderator who made the call, because approvals and rejections never recorded who pressed the button.

Every link gets its own commit thread

A hidden links page ranks the ten addresses people used most in the past month. Pick one and it gathers every commit that made it their card, oldest first, with the card shown once at the top.

Also leadingTook the lead from Draft thumbnails open into the whole picture #945. People get a new page that ranks the ten addresses used most as commit cards over the past month and collects every commit that carried each one.

You open /links and get a ranked list. It shows the 10 addresses people used as their commit card most in the last 30 days, each with a title, a site name, how many people and commits it drew, and when it last came up. Click one and the page becomes that link's story. Its card sits at the top, followed by every commit that carried it, oldest first, 20 at a time as you scroll.

Credit goes to mnapoli, who built the page on the link already attached to each commit, so there is no new table and nothing to migrate. The ranking counts distinct people first, then commits, over a 30-day window. The page finds a link by a SHA-256 fingerprint of its exact URL, and hides that card in the commits below so you see it once.

There is one catch. The fingerprint is exact. Add a trailing slash, change https to http, or leave a stray query parameter on the end, and the page treats it as a different link. It shows a fatal error and says there are no commits about this link, even when the article is all over the timeline. A URL pasted into a commit without becoming its card never shows up either.

In Brief

Features 3

  • The new-commits control now shows up to five author avatars and a +N badge instead of only a count. #796
  • Profiles now carry a 15th badge, super-saiyan, earned at 9,000 followers and drawn as a dragon ball. #1127
  • Hovering an author's name in chat thread messages now opens a profile card, matching the hovercards already used on changelog authors. #1020

Fixes 3

  • Typing #722 in a composer now stays literal on Space or punctuation, and only Enter, Tab, or a click swaps in the GitHub URL. #1098
  • Commit star buttons with zero stars no longer leave a blank gap where the count would be, so the icon sits flush. #1005
  • The New commits button now shrinks to fit one author and widens as more arrive, instead of always reserving space for four avatars. #1108

Internals 1

  • Daily active-user charts now stretch to fill their panel height so side-by-side cards line up, and the caption explaining the shadow bars is gone. #1133

Docs 1

  • The product metrics doc drops its tracking-start caveats, since activity counts now cover the whole product from launch. #1132
