Case closed for GitHub handles

Type a handle in lowercase and it still finds the person or organization, spelled the way GitHub spells it. The database now keeps one profile per handle, whatever its capitalization.

Top storyFirst on the front page. Held off 6 challengers since.

You are adding people to a new org and type a co-maintainer's handle in lowercase, though GitHub spells it with a capital. It lands, listed in the order you typed. No not-found, no wrong profile, no retyping.

Credit goes to mnapoli, who moved the case rule out of a pile of hand-written lookups and into the database. Handles now sit in a column that compares without regard to case, and one unique rule keeps each handle to a single profile, person or organization. That covers profile pages, mentions, organization pages through the API, following an organization, and search rankings. Adding members accepts up to 99 handles and spots the same person written two ways.

One catch. The upgrade merges nothing. If your database already holds @laravel and @Laravel as two profiles, the new unique rule refuses one of them and the upgrade stops rather than picking a winner.

A smiley button moves into the commit box

The commit and reply boxes now carry a smiley button that opens the app's emoji picker. Pick one and it lands at your caret, or over your selection.

Also leadingThe biggest story by anyone else. Held off 3 challengers since.

You are three lines into a commit message and want a rocket on the end. A small smiley now sits in the bottom right corner inside the box. Click it, type rocket into the search field, arrow across the grid eight emoji wide, press Enter, and the rocket lands at your caret with the cursor waiting right after it. Select a word first and the emoji replaces it.

Credit goes to hbenabdallah, who plugged the composers into the picker reactions already use instead of growing a second one. The button hands its emoji back after the popover closes, so focus returns to your text instead of the smiley. Insertion counts the result and respects the box's cap. That cap is 4,000 characters for an issue, 40,000 for a commit or a reply. hbenabdallah also taught Enter to stand down while an input method is composing, including Safari's odd 229 key code, so confirming a candidate no longer picks an emoji by accident.

One catch. At the cap the button just shrugs. The emoji does not go in, nothing flashes a warning, and your caret goes back where it was. Delete a character, then pick again.

In Brief

Fixes 4

  • Profiles and hover cards now label the button "Follow back" when that developer already follows you, instead of a plain "Follow" next to a "Follows you" note. #859
  • Long code blocks in folded commits now fade out toward Show more instead of ending on a flat cut with a loose ellipsis, so hidden lines read as continuing. #1351
  • Your own Followers list stops stamping handles with the "Follows you" badge, while other people's lists keep it. #1357
  • The shortcuts dialog now groups keys under Commits, Go to, Write and Anywhere headings, three columns on desktop and one on mobile, with labels trimmed and the list scrolling when it overflows. #1356

Internals 4

  • Commit pages and API responses now report each commit's author as a profile carrying a user-or-organization type, not always the person who posted. #1348
  • Timelines, blocks, mutes, and profile counts now key off a commit's author profile instead of the account that posted it. #1349
  • Each commit, new and existing, now stores the profile it is from separately from the account that posted it. #1346
  • New API tests now cover direct and org calls, live following, org claims, and the combined reply-recipient limit. #1344

Features 1

  • Follow and star notifications with exactly two people now name both and link each to their profile, while groups of three or more still read "and N others". #1332
