Child safety gets its own line in the terms

The terms now name the iOS and Android apps and spell out a zero-tolerance child safety rule, with a report path and a 24-hour clock. Everyone accepts again from 1 November.

Top storyTook the lead from Your GitHub orgs follow you in, now or later #1360. Everyone must accept the terms again from 1 November, and a new child safety section bans five kinds of abuse, with removal, bans, and reports within 24 hours. Held off 3 challengers since.

You open the terms page and scroll to Rules. The old one-liner about sexual content involving minors is gone, replaced by a pointer to a child safety section that now sits further down the page. It reads like a policy, not a footnote. It tells you what you can't do, how to report it, and what happens next.

Credit goes to simonhamp, who wrote the section and named the apps. It bans five things by category, from child sexual abuse material, including drawn, edited, or AI-generated images, to grooming, sextortion, sexualizing a child, and trafficking, and it defines a child as anyone under 18. It promises action within 24 hours, removal of the content, a permanent ban, and a report to authorities such as NCMEC. The Apps section now names the iOS and Android builds from NativePHP (Bifrost Technology, LLC) and sends you to the App Store and Google Play for them, while the Mac app still comes from dev-null.sh. The terms are dated 1 November 2026, and any acceptance stamped before that no longer counts.

One catch. The in-app Report button lives on commits only, and only on approved commits by other people. Its reasons are spam, harassment, harmful or private information, and something else. A profile or a message has no report button at all. For those, the section sends you to email and asks you not to send copies of any images.

Features

Your GitHub orgs follow you in, now or later

Signing up now brings over the organizations you follow on GitHub, and any that aren't here yet get followed the moment they show up. No second sign-in, no button to press.

Also leadingTook the lead from The org joins the byline #1359. Signing up with GitHub now imports the organizations you follow and queues ones not here yet, while existing users run an import command to catch up. Held off 3 challengers since.

You sign in with GitHub, reach the follow step, and the card that used to show only faces now carries organization avatars with their lane rings. The count reads as one line. It says, "You already follow 9 developers and 3 organizations." Across the five avatar slots, organizations get at least two of the places.

Credit goes to mnapoli, who taught the import to tell people from organizations and to remember the ones that aren't here yet. It reads up to 10 pages of 100 accounts in each direction, 1,000 either way, then splits people from organizations, following the organizations already on the site right away. The rest wait under their GitHub ID, and the moment an organization is created here, a mention does it, everyone who follows it on GitHub follows it.

Signed up before this landed? Run follows:import by hand. It imports organizations without redoing the people, resumes where it stopped, and halts before the pool drops under 1,500 of GitHub's 5,000 hourly requests, printing the reset time and how many users are left.

There is one catch. The waiting list is invisible. Pending follows appear only in your data export. No page lists them and no control cancels one. Follow an organization on GitHub today, unfollow it tomorrow, and it will still become a follow here the day it first shows up.

Commits can now carry an organization's handle instead of a person's. Follow an org and its commits drop into your Following log with a square avatar and the org's own lane.

In Brief

Features 1

  • Moderators now see who posted an organization's commit in the review queue and reports, with a link to that member's profile to time them out or ban them. #1374

Fixes 1

  • The moderators' bulk page now counts stars and replies on an organization's commits as reaching one profile, the organization, not each member who posted. #1379

Internals 1

  • Deleting a profile that commits still point to now fails, since commit authors are cleared in code beforehand instead of by the database on delete. #1376

Docs 1

  • The partners page stops promising past sponsors a permanent spot, so an ended sponsorship now just moves to the past-partners list with no lifetime guarantee. #1373
