Bookmarks take a star turn

The private Save button is gone. Every saved commit is a star now, and the Saved page has become Starred, newest first.

Top storyTook the lead from Tombstones lose their last words #782. The site replaces the private Save button with a star, converting old saves into public stars that count toward totals and show who starred each commit. Held off 8 challengers since.

Open any commit and the little bookmark beside the copy-link button has vanished. The star does both jobs now. Click it and the count ticks up by one. Click it again to take the star back. Your old saves are waiting behind your avatar, on a page headed Starred, with the most recently saved commit on top.

brendt built it. The saved table is dropped, and a migration copies all of it into stars, keeping the date you saved each commit and skipping ones you had already starred so their original star date stays put. The page loads 20 commits at a time and is labelled Only you.

One catch. A save used to be private. Each converted one is a real star now, so it counts toward the commit's public star total, and the author can open the who-starred list and find your name on it. Nobody gets a notification for the converted stars, but they can see them.

Moderators can now make you do the time with timeouts and bans

Moderators can now put you in timeout for an hour or a month, or ban you outright. Your first commit also stops to show you the rules.

Also leadingTook the lead from Tombstones lose their last words #782. Moderators can now time out or ban people, and first-time contributors must accept the rules in the browser before their first post. Held off 1 challenger since.

You hit reply on a busy thread, and instead of your post going up, a dialog tells you that you're in timeout for two days for spam or self-promotion. You can read but not post until it's over.

Credit goes to nunomaduro, who built both the timeout and the ban. Timeouts run 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, or 30 days. Each carries a reason picked from the rules. The reasons are engagement bait, low-effort posts, AI-generated posts, spam, harassment, unsafe or private information, or breaking the terms. A ban is blunter. Every page sends you to one that says why, and from there you can only sign out or delete your account. The terminal turns you away at the door. Banning someone cancels their scheduled commits, so lifting it doesn't dump them all out at once. Both stick to the GitHub account, so deleting your account and signing up again doesn't clear them.

The profile moderation menu now has the gavel, and Moderation → Timeouts & bans lists everyone in timeout and every ban. Ending a timeout early still leaves it on the record. Admins can't be moderated.

First-timers meet a new stop. Before your first commit, reply, or quote, the composer shows five rules until you send with "Got it, commit." The catch is that this first commit has to come from the browser. The terminal and the mobile app refuse it and send you off to read the rules on the web first.

In Brief

Fixes 17

  • Photos opened from the feed or a post page now keep that page's comment order when the 30-second poll refreshes, instead of flipping to the opposite order. #746
  • A commit that lands while a deploy reloads the page now clears its draft from the composer instead of bringing it back. #804
  • Returning to a page now re-reads the shared clock on the first subscribe, so relative commit ages and poll countdowns stop showing stale values until the next 30-second tick. #517
  • Links no longer swallow a trailing ellipsis or curly quote, so feed preview links ending a truncated excerpt stop pointing at URLs that 404. #765
  • Embedded asciinema recordings now resize to the terminal's reported height instead of sitting at a fixed 420px, killing the dead space under short casts. #874
12 more fixes
  • The log's new-commits counter now skips your own commits, so a commit made from another device or tab is no longer offered back as "1 new commit". #474
  • The star button on commits with zero stars no longer stretches its hover background past the icon, while still reserving room so the first star lands without a jump. #633
  • Pressing Cmd+Enter repeatedly in the commit composer now posts one commit instead of several, ignoring submits until the current post finishes. #759
  • Background polls now treat Cloudflare's 520 gateway error like 502, 503 and 504 instead of popping a blocking error dialog. #761
  • The Metrics tab's daily charts draw their dashed line at the range average instead of the tallest bar, and the screen-reader table captions stay hidden in every browser. #856
  • Switching a profile between Commits and Replies now keeps the page scroll and the tab indicator where they were, so the feed no longer jumps. #628
  • Sticky headers now stay opaque while profile colors change mid-scroll, so page content no longer bleeds through the title and tabs. #748
  • The composer avatar ring now crossfades between its dashed outline and progress ring in 150 ms, fixing the first-keystroke flash and abrupt state changes. #756
  • The top loading bar now stays visible above the sticky lane selectors while you switch feeds, instead of being covered mid-transition and popping back just to fade out. #766
  • The blue underline on active page tabs now stretches across the whole tab, not just the label text. #771
  • Active conversation tabs now show a full-width underline across Open, Fetched, and Stashed, instead of one hugging the label text. #785
  • The terminal page now tells users a commit body can be up to 4,000 characters, dropping the stale claim of a 3-character minimum. #864

Performance 3

  • Commit rendering now skips parsing when a body has no backticks, @ symbols, links, or colons, so plain-text commits stop paying for regex work. #347
  • Unstarring a commit you never starred no longer triggers a hot-score recalculation, so repeat unstar calls skip the extra work. #694
  • Muting a user now writes the mute directly in one insert instead of loading existing mutes first. #695

Features 2

  • On desktop, the Changelog link now opens its own page with the same entries, loading states, and pagination as the mobile popup. #770
  • The search dialog now has a Clear action beside Recent searches that wipes that account's saved history and drops focus back into the search box. #849

Internals 1

  • The admin metrics page now measures retention from the day after signup for every cohort, dropping the day-7 and day-14 fallbacks and the note about which day it was using. #812

Chores 1

  • The admin metrics funnel drops its referral step, which read 99% because signed-in members browsing each other's profiles counted as outside visits. #774
