At last, org mentions filter as you type

Type @ in an org chat and the member list narrows with each keystroke, no server search. An open picker also picks up colleagues who join or leave.

You're in an org thread, you type @tay, and names are already there under the caret for t-a-y, then t-a-y-l-o-r, with no pause between keystrokes and no request leaving the building. The list just narrows, six names at most, the way a local filter should.

Credit goes to xHeaven, who stopped asking the server to search a roster the thread already ships. The picker matches your lowercased text anywhere in a username or display name, then ranks exact usernames first, username prefixes next, display-name prefixes next, everything else after. People you follow move to the top of their tier. You, anyone you've muted, and anyone in a block, either direction, stay out. It shows at most six.

Keep the picker open and it stays honest. When a chat poll brings a member who just joined or drops one who left, the list redraws, and the highlighted row is clamped so Enter can't pick a name that's gone.

One catch. Nothing fetches the roster when you open the picker. It rides the thread's regular poll. That poll runs every 1.5 seconds while the thread is active and every 4 seconds once it has been quiet for a minute. A colleague who joins while you're mid-sentence can take a few seconds to show up.
