Emoji reactions hitch a ride to your phone

Signed API endpoints now let the mobile app add, take back, and rank emoji reactions on Remotes messages. Twelve per person per message, ordered by what you use most.

You fire a signed request at a message with a rocket emoji attached, and the JSON comes back with every reaction on that message, in the order people left them. Send the same emoji again and you still see one. Remove it and it drops off the list. Remove it a second time and the app just shrugs.

Credit goes to simonhamp, who carried the web's reaction tray into the mobile API. Three signed endpoints do the work. One adds, one takes back, and one ranks the emoji you use most, up to 32 of them, most used first. The rules are the web's. Use only emoji from the shortcode set, twelve different ones per person per message, and stay within a 300-a-minute bucket. Every change also bumps a version counter, so the other person's poll notices without reloading the thread.

One catch. Taking a reaction back runs a lighter check than leaving one. Removing only asks that Remotes is on and the message is visible to you, so in a conversation still waiting on a request to be merged, or across a block, you can pull your emoji off even though adding one gets a 403 or a 404.
