Features

A Translate button for the public log

Public posts and replies now carry a Translate button when they're written in another language. One click swaps in translated text, with a Show original link underneath. The post itself never changes.

You're reading a reply from a developer in Bonn, and there, in the row of actions under the text, sits a Translate button with a little languages icon. Click it and the German turns into English. Beneath the text a quiet line reads "Translated from German · Show original." Click that and the original is back, untouched.

Credit goes to paulinevos, who taught public posts and replies to switch languages. A translation model reads the post, names its language, and translates the text alone. The instructions tell it to leave links, mentions, emoji and code blocks exactly as written. The first reader to open an unfamiliar post starts detection in the background. Translations live for seven days and exact duplicate text shares one, so reposting the same joke costs nothing. You get ten translations a minute, and guests can read what is already cached but must sign in to make more.

Here is the catch. There is no language picker. The page takes the target from your browser's preferred language, so an English browser only ever asks for English, and a post already in English gets no button at all. Want it in Dutch? Change your browser, not the page.
