Emoji reactions check into the chat

Hover a message and a small pill offers three reactions. Press one and a chip appears underneath. The full picker is a search away.

Hover any message in a conversation or an org and a small pill appears over its top corner. It holds a laughing-face emoji, a check-mark emoji, and a heart emoji, plus a picker button. Click one and a chip drops under the message with a count. Click it again to take yours back. On a phone, hold a message for 420 milliseconds and a larger row lifts above it, with Copy text beside it. Double-tap and you leave a heart emoji. Double-tap again and it's gone.

Credit goes to xHeaven, who gave both remote messages and org messages a reaction of their own. The server stores one row per person, message and emoji, caps you at 12 different emoji on a single message, and tracks your 32 most-used emoji. The three quick slots start as a laughing-face emoji, a check-mark emoji, and a heart emoji. An emoji you use takes the weakest slot only after you've used it three more times than that slot. The picker is an eight-column grid of about 1,870 emoji, searchable by name and steerable with arrow keys and Enter. The thread polls every 1.5 seconds while you're active and every 4 seconds when idle, and a version cursor brings reactions on older messages along for the ride.

There is one catch. Twelve is the ceiling. The thirteenth different emoji on one message is refused, though tapping one you already left never counts twice.
